One to two times a year a group of AMOS providers travel to Central America to provide free medical care, medications and education to those in impoverished communities. Students from a local school in Guatemala serve as our interpreters throughout the clinic week. Working in these villages allows us to establish personal relationships and facilitate the greatest need for the people that live there. This sets the foundation for sustainable programs. Working with the Quique Ceron Foundation, the community outreach includes resources available to those communities, so that they can continue to receive the help they need after we have gone.
Educacion sin Fronteras (Education without Borders) The AMOS/QCF education program. Our education program is housed at the Casa de La Cultura in Esquipulas, Guatemala. This program provides education to children in the poorest areas of Eastern Guatemala and the Northern Triangle. A teacher works with elementary aged students 5 days a week and provides structured education and remediation to children in need. Through donations, AMOS pays the salary of the teacher and provides new educational materials, as needed, throughout the year.
Helping Babies Breathe (HBB). This program was created by the American Academy of Pediatrics and has been taught world wide. The program teaches medical professionals how to instruct midwives on neonatal resuscitation. Since 2018 the HBB program has been a part of our organization & mission trips and it has proven to be invaluable. Most of the midwives we train have no formal training and their skills have been handed down from generation to generation. Our hope for the future is to be able to provide Neo-Natalie Newborn mannequins to the trained midwives in Esquipulas who will, in turn, train other midwives in the outlying areas. This program supplies an in depth education in neonatal resuscitation along with equipment to help improve the mortality rate of those in impoverished communities.
Our health & hygiene program concentrates on delivering resources and education to adolescent girls and women. AMOS volunteers present educational materials and educate adolescent girls and women on the importance of basic hygiene and also empower young girls/women by letting them know that the changes in their bodies are normal and they are not alone. The program is followed by a question/answer session at the end. This is all done in a private, female only setting, to help the girls feel more comfortable asking questions about menstruation, child birth, general female health and medical conditions.
100% of our income is from private donors. Without donations, our organization would not be able to continue working for the good of our local community and those abroad. We also would not be able to fund our invaluable Helping Babies Breathe, Health & Hygiene and Education Without Borders programs in Central America. THANK YOU for your support!
